My wife and I recently spent a few days in downtown Pittsburgh. She had a conference, and I walked around with a camera a few times. I love the small details in the architecture that you find in older cities. My favorite location had to be Penn Station. Th wonderful arches, the details, the color of the stone. It was stunning.

The only problem I had was taking pictures of an ornamental eagle above a door at the post office. A security guard followed me half way down the next block to question me. I understand the whole homeland security thing, so it wasn’t a big deal. But if the federal reserve had no problem with me taking pictures, why would the post office? The guy was nice enough once I explained what I was doing and let me go about my business. Made the day a little more exciting I guess.

I don’t think he’d be this brave if he was in the tank with the Tiger Shark. This guy had no idea I took his picture. I just happened to be at the right place at the right time.

Myrtle Beach Sunset

This shot was taken from the Ocean Club Beach Resort in Myrtle Beach, SC. It was a very clear evening, the sun had set, and I took a 30 second exposure using a tripod. Minimal adjustment in photoshop.

Three days and four nights in Myrtle Beach, SC, and I only pulled the camera out of the bag 3 times. Yes, that’s right. You guessed it, family vacation time. I am not a big fan of taking vacation photos. It just seems so cheesy. If I’m taking photos of my family, I want the lighting to be just right. The composition needs to be good. I just don’t want to take them. I lose touch with the fun we are having as a family. Not to mention that it would make everything very boring for my family waiting for my “good shot”. This year I got out the camera for “Ripley’s Aquarium”, a sunrise from the balcony and, a sunset from the balcony. I know what you’re thinking. Two shoots from the balcony of your hotel room. How boring. Well, I wouldn’t have repeated it if the sunrise shots hadn’t somehow been lost somewhere between the camera and the computer. That’s the first time that has ever happened to me. I checked that card 4 times. I still don’t know what happened.

I love the lighting in aquariums. The colors are just incredible. The only problem is that it is always dimly lit, everything moves, and flashes are useless because everything is reflective. How do you do it? Pocket the flash, set your iso to 1600 or above, and open the aperture as wide as it will go. I used aperture priority mode (AV), and adjusted the exposure meter to -1 f/stop. This gave me a shutter just fast enough to make the photos reasonably sharp.
